5 fabulous winter skincare must-haves

December 16, 2016

Personally, I just love winters! An entire upgrade of the closet with my favorite winter-wear (turtlenecks, long boots, leather jackets, knit-dresses and so much more). I could go on.

But but but- the winter season comes with a price. It could spell out H-A-V-O-C to your skin. I've always struggled in winters when it comes to taking care of my skin (and hair too), mainly because I have  a combination skin-type. Finding the right product according to your skin-type is essential. Before you step out to purchase any skin-care product, make sure you are familiar and certain of your skin type.

Since I know the battle between our skin and winters is always intense and confusing sometimes, I bring to you 5 essential winter must-haves that will keep your skin soft, supple and glowing throughout the winter months.

A Good Moisturizer

A mandatory buy which will leave your skin flawless is an oil-free non-comedogenic moisturizer. The Neutrogena Oil-free SPF 15 Moisturizer ($12.99 / INR299has a lightweight and non-greasy formula which prevents clogging of pores. Whether you have a oily, sensitive, dry or combination skin, they have a moisturizer for all. I have been using this everyday (since a year) and given that I (also) have sensitive skin, this product is a savior. It also protects the skin against the harmful UVA/UVB rays. In the winters, you need not bother to apply additional sunscreen. Also, it does not contain parabens, is fragrance-free and serves as a good base prior to makeup as it gives a matte finish.

Facial Oil

I'm pretty sure once you hear the term 'facial oil', you end up thinking "Do I really need it? I already am using a moisturizer." I used to think the same until I did a lot of research and figured out the numerous benefits of it. Facial oils may seem pricey, but investing into these products is totally worth it!

Facial oils do not cause breakouts, as long as you know which type suits your skin the most. From reducing wrinkles, protecting your skin from harmful rays, shrinking the pore size, hydrating your skin, getting rid of rashes and zits to acting as a primer for makeup- these are just the major pros of using a facial oil everyday.

Which facial oils can you use? Non-fragrant oils to avoid the trigger of rashes or any sort of reaction.

Dry skin - Dry skin tends to be prone to acne, redness and patches. As challenging it is to find a product which doesn't clog your pores or result in more breakouts, there are certain oils which will help restore your skin's elasticity and repairing efficiency. I would suggest using one with coconut, argan or almond oil. It will replenish your skin by giving ample hydration and moisture while reducing inflammation on the skin.
Olay Regenerist Luminous Facial Oil ($16.99 / INR1147) or Clinique Smart Treatment Oil ($44 / INR2968)

Oily/combination skin - If you're thinking of breakouts, then you're wrong. All you need to do is a pick a lighter oil  like jojoba or apricot oil. Tsubaki Beauty Oil is one of my favorite and I swear by it! Formulated with Tsubaki, rice bran oil and wakame, it can be used on every skin-type including mature skin. Contains no preservatives, fragrances, ethyl alcohol and has an anti-oxidant rich formula.

Sensitive skin - Keeping in mind how frightening it can be every time you try out a new product, there's always that trust factor which keeps you from reaching out to new products. Apart from the product mentioned above, you can lay your hands on the Pai bioregenerate oil.

Body Butter

This winter don't forget to indulge yourself in the goodness of rich and hydrating body butter's. Some body butters can be super-creamy and require an effort to slather onto your skin.  So if you are in search for something not as creamy but also restores your skin's suppleness, then I have the answer.

You can try out the The Body Shop Spa Of The World Hawaiian Kukui Cream ($36 / INR2430) which keeps your skin moisturized and super-soft for the entire day and night too!

If you are tight on budget and want a quick drugstore pick, I'd recommend the L'occitane Organic Pure Shea Butter ($12 / INR710). Have you heard about it? If you haven't, I'm pretty sure you will love it. Apparently, this organic product is good for everything - skin, elbows, knees and even your hair! It leaves your skin feeling so smooth and your mane with a luscious texture.

Face wash

The face wash you use contributes to your skin quality to a huge extent. If you use one which is too strong or too mild for your skin, either way you will end up having breakouts and redness. During winters opt for a mild face wash or to be specific, a non-drying one. The Neutrogena Pure Mild Facial Cleanser is gentle yet removes all the makeup and gunk without stripping out your skin's natural oil. It suits all skin types. However, if you have oily skin, you may find this a tad bit too gentle.

So in that case, you can try out the Pep-Start 2-in-1 Exfoliating Cleanser by Clinique. This new product not only leaves your skin squeaky clean but it also exfoliates at the same time. Unlike other products which claim the same end up drying out the skin. However, this face wash is gentle. Perfect for winters! Also its two in one formula preps your skin for an amazing makeup application!

Face mask

Winters come with a price - a price our skin has to pay. But you need not worry, all you need to do is make sure your skin stays hydrated. For a lovely dewy complexion, I highly recommend the Sephora Rose Face Mask ($6 / INR407) which instantly locks in moisture and provides hydration. Amongst its fellow sheet masks, the rose mask is Sephora's best seller. (I shall review it in detail in my coming blogs)

The mask contains two active ingredients- natural rose extract which boosts hydration and broccoli extracts helps to brighten your complexion.

And yes, don't forget to gulp down at least 10-12 glasses of water per day to achieve a clear skin with a beautiful glow.

So, there you have it! These are some of my favorite (and trustworthy) products you can lean onto in times of a winter skin crisis. Your suggestions are always welcome! Drop a comment below if you would like to know more details about any product or have any queries. xx
